MMUA is pleased to announce the 2025 Competent Person and Excavation Safety Workshop.

This course is intended for public works personnel, water/wastewater personnel, lineworkers, engineering personnel, contract workers, and others involved with underground utility or infrastructure work.

The OSHA Construction Standard (29 CFR 1926.32) defines a "competent person" as someone who is:

  • capable of identifying existing and predicable hazards in the surroundings, or
  • working conditions which are unsanitary, hazardous, or dangerous to employees, and
  • who has authorization to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate them.

Participants will engage in discussion and hands-on activity to:

  • Increase your understanding of the "competent person" role on the job site
  • Demonstrate correct soil-testing procedures
  • Identify hazards associated with trenching and excavating
  • Increase knowledge of different types of protective systems
  • Further develop proper "pot holing" practices for gas and powerline excavation

Member: $545 per person
Non-member: $815 per person
All fees increase $50 on April 25, 2025.
Registration fee includes: Tuition, materials and supplies, lunch on Wednesday, and refreshment breaks. Participants are responsible for their own personal protective equipment (PPE) and lodging.

Because some of the training will take place outside of the classroom, participants must have the proper PPE, including:

  • High-visibility clothing, appropriate for the weather
  • Hard hat
  • Safety glasses
  • Work gloves
  • Safety footwear
Participants earn hours for attendance. Continuing education information can be found in the participant's Member Compass after the event.
Cancellations are subject to a $50 charge per person if received by 5:00 pm on February 21, 2025. Refunds issued to a credit card will be subject to an additional 3% fee. No refunds issued after May 9.
By registering for this event I/we authorize Minnesota Municipal Utilities Association (MMUA) to photograph me at this event and use such photographs in MMUA marketing materials (both electronic and print). I/we understand that I/we will not be paid for giving this consent.
